LAPLACE – A Houston man was identified Tuesday afternoon as the victim in a fatal one-car crash on Interstate 10 in St. John Parish Saturday, according to a release from State Police.

Jackson Murray, 22, was the only passenger of a 2003 Toyota Camry that veered off the interstate and into a tree before bursting into flames around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, said Trooper Melissa Matey, a spokeswoman for State Police Troop B.

Investigators said the Camry was traveling in the eastbound left lane of I-10 at a high rate of speed suddenly veered off the roadway onto the median into westbound traffic. The Camry continued veering to the left and finally came to a stop in the trees off the roadway. The vehicle struck a tree and caught fire, Matey said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said speed is suspected to be a factor of the crash. Toxicology results are also pending along with the autopsy.
