Make it three wins in a row for St. Charles.
The Comets defeated Houma Christian 6-0 on Thursday night in LaPlace, also marking the third straight contest that the once-struggling Comet offense has scored at least six goals.
Karl Gommel scored two first half goals to allow SCC to take a 2-0 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
But Coach Rick Woodroof felt his team was capable of better play than what he saw through the first 40 minutes.
“I lit a little bit of a fire under them at halftime,” he said. “I was pretty disappointed in our play to that point. I told them that we had to move the ball better, to play the game like it’s meant to be played. And our guys did that in the second half.”
It added up to four more Comet scores. Paul Cupit joined Gommel as a two-goal scorer. Pierre St. Martin and Daniel Ballard each added another.
“I thought the ball movement was much, much better,” Woodroof said. “Pierre played the middle, and he distributed it well. Everyone was looking for their teammates.”
Woodroof noted that while the smaller Houma Christian team lacked offensive firepower, its defensive play was impressive. Gommel and Cupit, he said, earned their goals for being tough finishers.
“They each finished really well. (Houma Christian) made it hard to score,” said Woodroof. “The opportunities that we had, they were able to take advantage of them.”
St. Charles still has a daunting task upcoming – one more against district foe E.D. White (the first came yesterday, after press time). Return matches with Riverside and Houma Christian are also on the table.
“I’m just looking for our guys to execute to the best of their ability,” said Woodroof. “To win this district, it would be a pretty tall order. But if we execute the things we’ve been teaching, with a young team, it would be a successful season.”
