Sunday is Father’s Day and I’m sure I will get some nice cards and a few shirts.  How do I know that?  Because every year is usually a repeat of Father’s Days past.  Do I appreciate the gifts, cards, and thoughts that go with the day?  Of course I do, but I can’t remember the gifts I received last year.  

In 1993, I published a letter I wrote to my dad while serving in the U.S. Navy more than 50 years ago.  Many years after his death, my brother found the letter.  It was the only letter he had kept of the many I had written.  

In that article, I encouraged people to write their fathers a personal letter instead of buying a gift.  My daughter, Ann, took my advice.  It’s been 15 years now and I still have my treasured letter dated June 20, 1993.  Please allow me to share it with you.

“Dear Dad,

Today is Father’s Day!  I’m taking the advice of a well-respected individual (you) and I’m writing you a letter.

As I was reading the letter you wrote to Paw-Paw forty years ago, all I could think about was how you are exactly like him.

You and Mom, both, gave and gave to Ronny, Matt, Kay, and me, unselfishly, not just while we were living under your roof, but even now, you want to make our lives a little easier, even though you are going through some very difficult trials.

I just want to say how much I appreciate and love you.  Thanks for never failing to say “I love you” and for giving out the many hugs you still give out today.

Not only are you a great father, you’re one terrific grandfather.  I don’t know of many other “Paw-Paw’s” who include all their grandchildren in as many activities as possible, the way you do  You make each one feel special, just like you did with Ronny, Matt, Kay, and me.  I just hope I can be as giving to my children as you and Mom have been to us.

So, Dad, Happy Father’s Day from all of us and also from the many teenagers you reach throughout the year.  You are the best!
