LAPLACE-A three-year-old female is in critical condition, and her mother was killed, after a one-vehicle crash that took the life of the driver on Sunday evening in St. John Parish.
“The car, a 1997 Acura C30, driven by another female was traveling eastbound on I-10 in the left lane when the driver veered off the left side of the roadway and entered the grassy median for unknown reasons,” said Joseph Piglia, spokesperson for Louisiana State Police Troop B.
According to the report, the vehicle continued traveling east on the median between the east and westbound lanes between the bridges and ran into the water.
“The vehicle was completely submerged into the water for approximately 30-40 minutes before divers arrived,” Piglia said.
“Divers were able to retrieve the child and the EMS team immediately began CPR where they were able to revive the young girl,” he said.
The girl was transported to Our Lady of Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge where she remains in critical condition.
The driver suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. Her identity is being held pending notification of the family.
The cause of death is still being investigated and toxicology reports are pending as to whether driver impairment was a factor in the crash.
Trooper Jeff Argrave is continuing his investigation.
