RESERVE – The Wildcats scratched out a win in District II American Legion play on Saturday in a home game where East St. John got a lift from a two-run homer by Kendrick Sentimore in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead and the eventual win.
His coach called it a bomb.
“That was a big hit,” said ESJ Coach Ryan Sims. “He stepped up and just blew it away. We were down by one and he came in right when we needed it and got the two-run bomb. He came through.”
With Stephen Haniford going the distance for the Wildcats from the mound, ESJ took an 11-9 win after falling behind early in the game. But with a steady offensive output, driven by Sentimore, Donald Goff and Raymond Anderson, who all notched two hits apiece, the Wildcats clawed their way back into it and got their second win of the season.
ESJ hit the road on Monday, heading to Belle Chasse to take on P.J. Realty for another district match-up. With Davarian Ursin starting on the mound, the Wildcats pounced on top by four runs early on. But the P.J. Realty team found their rhythm and forced Mackail Singleton to come on in relief to take the 6-2 loss.
“We’re getting better,” Sims said. “On Saturday we came up with a big win. And then against Belle Chasse we jumped on them early. But we’re still looking for consistency. We’re not playing a complete game yet and sometimes just taking innings off. If we can just minimize those kinds of things, everybody could see that we have a good group.”
