The Comets went into Metairie to play John Curtis and left with a bang on Tuesday on a 14-run final inning that clinched the 10-2A title, and kept them perfect in district play heading into the final week of the regular season.

St. Charles intimidated Curtis into a pair of runs right off of the bat as Kyle Olasin and Matt Heltz both scored in the first inning despite getting no hits. Olasin walked and scored on an infield out at second by Jared Nowell. Heltz found his way home on a bases-loaded balk.

After that, the Patriots’ Mullins hit a home run in the third, but that’s all Curtis could muster and SCC soon started earning their runs.

Olasin led off with a triple so start, and Heltz got him in with a sacrifice fly. The Comets built on the lead in the fourth when Chris Waguespack bounced a hit off of the pitcher’s leg, and pinch runner Matt Walters made it home when Roland Ricca doubled with two outs to make it 4-1. They upped it on their next opportunity when Olasin again tagged the plate soon after Casey Robottom laid down a successful bunt. With runners now at the corners, SCC ran a double steal and a commanding lead. Robottom and Heltz made their way home to end the fifth inning with a 7-1 score.

Curtis threatened to make a push in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a run and putting a runner on second. But a single hit towards Casey Robottom put the runner out when Robottom gunned him down at the plate to retire the side.

That’s when things got really ugly.

To finish it off, the Comets pushed in 14 runs on nine hits in the top of the seventh. The Patriots finished off scoring to make it a 21-3 final.

Olasin went 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Nowell and Waguespack both went 2-for-5 for two RBIs.

The Comets next game comes Tuesday against Riverside in the two teams’ final district match-up. This game is the final home game for St. Charles and will be their senior day. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
