The Hahnville High School Wrestling Team participated in the Louisiana State Wrestling Tournament on the weekend of February 17th and 18th.
The team is only in its sixth year and has already placed in the top eight in the state.
“This year was a good springboard for the next few years. We have eight of fourteen starters returning for the following and are looking to have a better year next year.” said Coach Dan Erwin.
The team placed three wrestlers in the top six and four in the top ten. Leading the way was Levi Gruwell who was the state champion at the 171 pound weight class, Brice Jacobs who was the state runner-up at the 189 pound weight class and Mac Farrell who placed sixth in the 140 pound weight class. Gruwell, a junior said “It is a great thing to be the first to do something. I was the first state champion in school history. It makes me feel like each wrestler in the wrestling room is a part of it. We all work hard and everyone makes everyone else better each day.”
Brice Jacobs, a sophomore said “I feel good about what I have done, but I have two more years to win it all. The team gets the credit. We all work with each other and I could not have done it without all of them.” Coach Erwin said “the best part of this is that immediately after the state tournament was over, the team was asking when does practice begin and what camps can we go to?”
Coach Garza said “it was a special day for Hahnville Wrestling. We need to get in the junior highs now to get the kids started earlier.” If anyone is interested in wrestling in St. Charles Parish, please contact Coach Dan Erwin at Hahnville High School. The school is the practice site for River Parish Wrestling.
