St. Charles basketball took a tumble in district standings last week when the boys and girls squads dropped games in both St. James and Donaldsonville.
The boys squad (15-10, 3-2), who lost a tie for first in district when they played the Wildcats last Tuesday, fell into a tie for second place in 10-2A after they fell to the Tigers on Friday by a score of 75-59. The Lady Comets (12-13, 2-5) missed a chance to make a jump in standings as the game against Donaldsonville could have brought them into a tie for third, but the SCC squad went through a scoring drought in the second and third quarters and gave up a 64-33 victory for the Lady Tigers.
For the boys’ game, Donaldsonville took the lead early and the Comets chipped away to come to within five points going into the fourth quarter. But the Tigers opened it up early in the final period, a quarter where the Comet defense gave up 28 points to make it the 75-59 final that it was. The victory evens the series this season at one apiece.
Senior Michael Troglen was the game-high scorer with 23 while John Bonura got 13 and Andrew Coleman got 12. Antonio Robinson scored 21 to lead Donaldsonville in the win.
The girls’ game featured two teams who were both vying to remain within reach of playoff competition, and opened fairly evenly as the first quarter ended with a 16-12 Donaldsonville lead. SCC had a tough time following the opening period, getting outscored 34-8 through the second and third quarters, and finished up the game with a 64-33 loss. That puts the Lady Comets at 12-13 on the season and 2-4 in district.
