RESERVE — Reserve Christian’s all time leading scorer Demond “Tweety” Carter poured in 46 points and led all scorers as the RCS Eagles handed Archbishop Shaw it’s 13th loss of the season with a 101-66 final.
The loss dropped Shaw to 6-13 on the season while the Eagles improved to 30-5 on the back of the unstoppable Carter.
It started fast. Carter drained a fade-away baseline jumper with a hand in his face to start the scoring in the first half but the Eagles were just getting warmed up.
A fast break that led to a rim-rattling one-handed jam by the Eagles’ Kevin Branch made it 13-2 in favor of RCS when it began to rain – three-pointers that is.
Branch started the shooting frenzy by dropping a three to make it 17-2 with about three minutes to play in the period. Carter then nailed a pair of back-to-back three-pointers to take the lead to 23-4.
Shaw’s Jerry Morehouse answered back with two consecutive three’s for six of his 19 points which cut the lead to 25-10 early in the second quarter. Unfortunately for Shaw, the Eagles had no intention of letting them back into the game.
The rest of the first half was all Carter as he sunk five three-pointers over the next four minutes of the half to bring the Eagles lead to 45-24. Carter then scored the final points of the half as he knifed through the lane past three defenders to bring the score to 49-24.
The story was much the same in the second half as Carter opened up with a hot hand in the third, popping a pair of three-pointers to increase the Eagles’ lead to 59-29.
Showing that he’s not just a one-trick pony, on the next possession Carter found Branch on the baseline with a perfect no-look, behind-the-head pass that Branch drained for another three for the Eagles.
Carter showed off his range with another long jumper while standing a good five feet behind the three-point line to take the Eagles lead to 79-38 at the close of the third quarter.
After hitting two more three-pointers in the fourth Carter rested for the remainder of the game with the contest well in hand. With 46, he led all scorers while Branch added 15 and Porter got 14. Joey Morehouse scored 19 for Shaw, as did Charlie Bailey while David Hughes added 17.
Archbishop Shaw may have felt the wrath of the “Tweety” Carter Show but Reserve Christian Head Coach Tim Byrd was very pleased with his team’s play and concentration.
“Tonight they came out and shot the ball well.” he said. “With this team it’s a matter of playing with a high-level of focus. They’re real talented and they know how to win.”
Byrd’s answer to whether anyone can stop Carter can be summed up in one word – no.
“He scored 41 last night and he was triple teamed,” Byrd said of Carter’s play in a loss from the previous night. “He’s a very special kid and we’re going to enjoy him for the rest of the year.”
Byrd was referring to the Eagles’ Monday match-up against Provine of Jackson in Mississippi. Reserve Christian suffered only their fifth loss of the season with a 74-70 final score.
The Eagles are set to get back on the court this Tuesday when they travel to East St. John for a non-district re-match. The first game, held on December 5 at the Eagles Nest, was a 114-71 victory for RCS in which Carter scored 74 points.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in the Wildcat Gym. Boys JV will play at 6 p.m
