Savoie’s 14 blocks, six kills not enough to get by number two seeded team
LAFAYETTE– St. Charles gave a top seeded team in the 2A state volleyball playoffs a scare Thurday when they took the second game and threatened to rally for the lead in the third. But St. Martin’s high-powered offense outlasted the surge to end the Comets season with a 10-17 record.
St. Martin’s established themselves as the second seed that they are early on with a convincing 25-18 win. But the second game evened the match up as SCC adjusted and the Comets came alive for a 25-22 win.
Things got interesting in the third game, as St. Martin’s hopped on top with a steady five-point lead, while the Comets kept it within range. A six-point rally that started on a Gina Monica serve soon made it a 24-20 St. Martin’s lead, but even a pair of blocks by St. Charles’ Lauren Coniglio in one volley couldn’t keep up the pressure on their opponent, and the Comets dropped the match by five points.
The two game deficit seemed to take its toll on the Lady Comets, as they never could get back on track, and dropped the final game 13-25.
Leading SCC in the effort, Amanda Savoie knocked down six kills, five assists, 13 digs, 14 blocks and seven aces.
Mary Clement rounded out the board with four kills and 21 defensive digs while Lauren Coniglio got two spikes and 11 blocks for 13 points.
