EDGARD – The first victory is almost always the hardest one to get, and for the West St. John girls’ volleyball team that win finally came Wednesday night, as the Lady Rams swept False River on the road 25-14, 25-14 and 25-18.
The Lady Rams improved to 1-4 with eight games left on their schedule.
“Our team definitely needed it,” said head coach Glenda Mattos. “Now our confidence is up.”
Tranell Mitchell led the Lady Rams with eight kills, followed by Destani Comminie with seven and Sharda Bradley with four. Bradley led the team in digs with five, followed by Trena Songy, who had four.
West St. John will be in action next Monday at home against Catholic-Pointe Coupee, and then travel to Reserve Christian Wednesday. Both matches will start at 5 p.m.
But Mattos could not overestimate how much she felt her young team needed its first victory after losing a Tuesday night match to White Castle.
“I know passing over this hump will help,” she explained. “Even if we don’t win anymore this year, it’ll help for next year. It changed the girls’ mindset to think that they can win.”
