LAS VEGAS — Pokey Chatman and Seimone Augustus, of the LSU Lady Tigers basketball team, were each recognized at the 39th annual Academy of Victory Sports Awards this past weekend.

Chatman, the head coach of the Lady Tigers, received the Victor Award as the nation’s outstanding women’s college basketball coach, while Augustus, a senior-to-be at LSU, was named the nation’s outstanding female college basketball player.

“This award is extremely special to me, not only because of its 39 year history, but more importantly because of its partnership with the City of Hope Medical Research Center,” Chatman said. “The job we do as coaches pales in comparison to the many lives saved through the cancer research represented by the entire Victor Awards Team and the City of Hope.”

Chatman, who guided LSU to a 33-3 overall record, the school’s first Southeastern Conference regular season title and a second straight NCAA Final Four appearance, was also named the Coach of the Year by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, the Black Coaches Association and the United States Basketball Writers Association,  and received the Naismith Award as the countries top coach.

Augustus, a 6-1 forward, averaged 20.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game to lead the Lady Tigers. The Baton Rouge native was the consensus National Player of the Year, winning the Wade Trophy, the John R. Wooden Award, the Honda Sports Award, and the Naismith Trophy and was named the USBWA and the Associated Press’ Player of the Year.

“It’s only fitting that Seimone’s efforts as a basketball player be recognized by a group that has impacted lives (through cancer research), the way she has impacted the game,” Chatman added.

The Victors, considered the Academy Awards of athletics, consist of 35 awards among 15 sports. Honoring the country’s most outstanding professional and amateur athletes and coaches, the Victor Awards consistently attract sports legends and famous presenters alike.

The National Academy of Sports Editors, comprised of a cross-section of sports editors, writers and broadcasters, vote to determine the winners of the awards.
