NEW ORLEANS – After a spectacular 2005 season that resulted in a 56-12 final record, a Super Regional victory over Rice and its second appearance in the College World Series, Tulane dominated the 2005 All-Louisiana baseball team selected by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association and announced Sunday.

The Green Wave picked up four of the state’s five major awards as junior pitcher/first baseman Micah Owings was named the Louisiana Player of the Year, junior pitcher/outfielder Brian Bogusevic earned the Pitcher of the Year nod, rookie third baseman Brad Emaus was the state’s Freshman of the Year and head coach Rick Jones was selected as the Louisiana Coach of the Year.

In addition to Bogusevic and Owings, junior shortstop Tommy Manzella and junior centerfielder Nathan Southard made the first team All-State squad, while catcher Greg Dini and Emaus were named to the second team.

Owings added the Louisiana Player of the Year honor to the Conference USA Player of the Year trophy he earned earlier this week. The Gainesville, Ga. native ended the season as the Green Wave’s leading hitter with a .359 batting average, 18 home runs and 65 RBI while going 12-4 on the mound with a 3.26 earned run average and a team-leading 135 strikeouts. An All-America choice by Collegiate Baseball (second team) and Baseball America (third team) in his first season at Tulane, Owings was drafted in the third round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The lefthanded Bogusevic, a native of Oak Lawn, Ill., was Tulane’s top hurler through much of the season and compiled a 13-3 record while leading the Wave in wins (13) and innings pitched (130.1). He struck out 129 batters on the season as Tulane broke its single season team strikeout mark. Bogusevic also played a stellar rightfield and hit .328 on the year, although he missed several weeks due to injury. first-round draft choice of the Houston Astros, Bogusevic was named to four All-America teams, including to Louisville Slugger’s first team, and was a semifinalist for three national awards.

Emaus, the C-USA as well as the Louisiana Freshman of the Year, started 68 games for the Green Wave as a rookie and hit .321 with 13 home runs (second on the team) and 56 RBI. The Senoia, Ga. native was also a first team All-Conference USA choice and was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team.

Jones picked up the Louisiana Coach of the Year award for the fourth time in his career. He completed his 12th season at Tulane with a record of 523-237-1 at the school for a .688 winning percentage, while his career mark stands at 799-330-2 (.707). Named the C-USA Baseball “Coach of the Decade” as well as the league’s Coach of the Year during the 2005 season, Jones has taken 10 of his Tulane teams into NCAA postseason play and has coached both of Tulane’s College World Series teams (2001 and 2005).

Manzella, a third-round draft choice of the Houston Astros and second team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association, hit .347 with 63 RBI and a team-leading 24 doubles and 21 stolen bases in his senior season. The Chalmette, La. product was a four-year starter for the Green Wave who was also an Academic All-American, becoming just the second Tulane student-athlete to achieve that rare double All-American feat.

He was joined on the LSWA first team by centerfielder Nathan Southard, the Green Wave’s leadoff hitter throughout the 2005 season who batted .341 with 53 RBI and tied Manzella for team-high honors in doubles with 24. Southard scored 80 runs to lead Tulane and also blasted 12 round-trippers, including three in a single game in the Conference USA Tournament.

The team was compiled based on nominees from the baseball sports information directors at the various schools and the nominees were voted on by a group of LSWA members. The complete team is listed below.
