LAPLACE-To the winners go the spoils.
St. Charles Catholic captured the 10-3A-team crown in prep baseball this past season and were rewarded by having seven players and a coach named to the first-team 10-3A squad.
Headlined by District Most Valuable Player Casey Robottom, Kyle Olasin, Jesse Martin, Michael Onacle, Matt Sutton, James Callahan, Matt Heltz and David Rollo all were named to the 10-3A squad.
Comets Head Coach Paul Waguespack was also named Coach of the Year.
“We had a good year,” Waguespack said. “We really did. The kids deserve to be recognized. Casey had one of those types of years that sometimes only come around once in a blue moon. Hopefully he will be able to repeat it this summer and next prep season.”
The scary thing for opponents of St. Charles Catholic this summer and next prep season is that fact that most of the Comets who brought home all-district honors will be returning next season, including Robottom.
“Of the seven guys who made the squad, five of them return,” Waguespack said. “That is definitely a big plus for us. We are excited and hopefully we can build on that this summer.”
Opponents will get an early look at the still powerful Comets squad in American Legion action this summer.
Waguespack was also gracious to be named the 10-3A Coach of the Year.
As an unselfish as they come, the Head Coach credited his squad for his individual recognition.
“It is definitely always nice to be recognized by your peers,” Waguespack said. “But this is a team sport. It is a team thing.
“If my team did not play well, I would not get recognized. When your team does play well, you get that recognition because you have obviously done something to deserve and earn that recognition.”
