This year’s annual Fishing Rodeo for St. Charles Parish senior citizens will be held on Friday, March 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Spillway Park near Norco. This event is one of the yearly highlights for all senior citizens in the parish.
Fishing is the main attraction of the event, with prizes for the various “rodeo” fish categories. There will also be plenty of other activities to be enjoyed by those who attend. There will be a Crochet Round-Up, for which participants will make granny-type squares for a colorful full-size afghan to be awarded by drawing when it’s finished to one of the contributors. There will be a Dessert Contest, a Tall Tales Fish Story Contest, and a Hat Contest. In addition, there will games, music, and entertainment all day. Information about entering the contests and about the Crochet Round-Up is available at the senior citizens activity centers and by calling 783-3008.
Both breakfast and lunch will be served, and bait for fishing will be provided. Round-trip transportation from clients’ homes to and from the event will be available.
Advance reservations for breakfast and lunch are required and may be made by calling 783-3008. Advance reservations for transportation may be made by calling 783-6683.
All senior citizens in St. Charles Parish are invited to attend, and everyone is encouraged to bring their own lawnchair.
This year’s Fishing Rodeo is co-sponsored by the St. Charles Council on Aging, the St. Charles Parish Parks and Recreation Department, and the 6th graders of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School. Each of the students will be paired with a senior citizen to share in the day’s fishing and other excitement.
The students’ participation has been made possible through a grant from the Joe W. and Dorsett Brown Foundation, which was secured by Janeen Rodrigue, Director of Youth Ministry.
