LAPLACE-A lot of people thought it would be a miracle if the St. Charles Catholic boys team would make the playoffs.
The Comets did not only accomplish that feat, but they are going in as the top seed from district 10-3A.
St. Charles captured the district championship Friday night when they defeated Lutcher, 70-53.
Michael Troglen again led the Comets with 35 points and Jon Bonura had 16 points in the big victory.
The victory over Lutcher concludes the regular season for the Comets. St. Charles Catholic finishes he regular season with a 15-16 record and a 5-3 record in district 10-3A.
As of press time, the Comets playoff opponent has not been announced but the game will be on Friday night at St. Charles Catholic.
“You have to get in it to win it,” St. Charles Catholic Head Coach Jeff Montz said. “We made it in and now it all starts over. We are hoping to take one game at a time like we did in district. However, this time you don’t get any second chances. If you blow it the first time you go home and your season is over.
“Against Lutcher our guys did an excellent job of packing in the zone and playing hard defense. We outscored them 10-2 in the second quarter. I also thought that we did a good job of rebounding against a much bigger team. Our second quarter performance gave us the confidence that we needed to finish out Lutcher.”
Montz said if his team executes well they have a shot to make a run in the playoffs.
“We just have to try and stay focused in on one game at a time,” Montz said. “We need to do what we have to do to succeed each game and just move on from there.
“If we can do that and stay within oursevles every possession and value them, we have the chance to really make a long run in the playoffs and be successful.”
