When the head coach is having trouble picking out things to try and get his team to work on, you know things have to be going well for you.

Remaining perfect in district 6-5A action, the Rams defeated St. Martin’s, 64-44, Friday night.

Dana Stipe led West St. John with 15 points and Denarold Anderson had 14 points.

16-2 on the season and 4-0 in district play, WSJ head coach Antoine Edwards continues to praise his team’s performance.

“I’m happy with the victory, but there is still room for improvement,” Edwards said. “There is always room for improvement.

“Friday night we came out a little bit sluggish. St. Martin’s kind of jumped out on us. Thanks to our defense, we fought out and got the lead and never looked back.”

Putting the game away in the second quarter with a 20-6 performance, Edwards credited his team’s defensive effort.

“I thought our intensity level on defense really picked up,” Edwards said. “The intensity on the defensive level then turned into intensity on the offensive side.

“Our defense was the biggest key for us Friday night. It allowed us to come away on top.”

Confident in his team’s ability to continue to pick up district victories, Edwards said he has his eyes on a much bigger prize.

“Once again, we shot poorly from the free throw line,” Edwards said. “We did not shoot the ball well. I have really tried to focus on the free throw shooting.

“What I am looking at is by the time playoff time comes you know that you are not going to be beating teams by double-digits. Games are going to be close and free throws are going to win it for you. I am kind of looking a little bit ahead.”

The new Rams superstar of the game, Edwards was happy with Stipe’s play.

“Dana shot the ball well, but he also had an outstanding night on the defensive end,” Edwards said. “He must have had at least six or seven steals the other night.

“I thought he played outstanding. I also thought Dehaven Butler also played well on the defensive side of the ball.”
