Fontenot has superb all-around game
RESERVE – The Riverside boys basketball season got their 2004 season off to a big start this past Tuesday night when they blasted False River, 73-39, in their season opener.
Riverside placed four starters in double figures, in the kind of balanced scoring that head coach Tommy Monier is hoping to see more of later in the year.
“We really put points on the board for the first game,” Monier remarked. “For the first game I thought the kids did pretty well.”
That was an understatement as Riverside exploded out of the gates for a 27-9 first period lead.
Chris Fontenot had a huge all-around game for the winners, leading them with 22 points, eight rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Josh Labiche was equally strong for the winners, contributing 17 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Robert Tamplain and Matt Rogers had 13 and 12 points, respectively, with Tamplain adding three steals.
Anthony Trosclair led the club on the boards along with Fontenot, grabbing eight rebounds, while Jarid Caesar had a strong floor game with four assists and six steals.
Riverside shot 43 percent for the game, while turning in some strong defense, holding False River to only 29 percent from the field.
The scoring performance for Riverside was especially impressive when noting how good they were from the three point range, where they hit on six of 13 shots from outside the arc.
The club returns to action on Tuesday at Pearl River.
