We have reached the halfway point of high school football season here in the River Parishes. District play begins this week for five of the area teams. One team-Hahnville-is the lone team still without a loss. This week the Tigers, who are coming off an emotional victory over East St. John, will travel to Galiano to play South Lafourche in 6-5A action. Another key 6-5A game will pit Destrehan against East St. John in Reserve. Both of these teams are in a must-win situation. District 10-3A will see an interesting battle between St. James and St. Charles Catholic at Dupuy Stadium. Lutcher will travel to play an improving Donaldsonville team. West St. John will try to see that Buras remains winless when they play each other Friday night at Dinvaut Stadium, while Riverside Academy will look to improve on their 3-1 overall record when they host Redeemer-Seton in a 10-2A game.

Destrehan versus East St. John

During the last two years, mother nature has added a twist to the game between Destrehan and East St. John. The 2002 game had to be delayed because of severe weather in the area. The 2003 game saw field conditions in bad shape because of thunderstorms earlier in the day. Ironically, forecasters are calling for a 60 percent chance of rain Friday and Saturday. Some things never change.

In addition, both schools have won on the other team’s field, Destrehan won at East St. John in 2002 and East St. John returned the favor in 2003. The Fighting Wildcats, with new quarterback Jai Eugene at the helm, are coming off a good performance against HL Bourgeois, while East St. John, who is facing the possibility of dropping two district games in a row, is coming off a tough loss to rival Hahnville last week.

Other than quarterback Ryan Perrilloux, the Wildcats are led by wide receiver Ricky Dixon, who has more than 600 yards of total offense alone this year.

It will up to the East St. John defense to stop running back Chris Bullock, who had 10 carries and 173 yards in a 38-9 thumping of H.L Bourgeois. DHS racked up 253 total yards rushing in the victory.
