Home is supposed to be a safe place, but where does a person find safety when home is not safe? Where does a person go for safety when they have to live in a home that is dangerous?

A wife, a child, even a husband should expect for the home to be safe. Yet, domestic violence robs those who are its victims of that refuge by using the hands of someone who is loved and trusted. When a spouse and parent chooses to abuse instead of protect there is no safe place at home.

When victims of domestic violence finally decide to seek safety, it can be found, however. It can be found in shelter. Often times that will mean moving to a safe, undisclosed location. More and more of those are becoming available as we become more aware of the scope of domestic violence. Yet, there is a greater shelter where safety can be found if one seeks it. It is recorded in the Bible, “Because oppressed people are robbed and needy people groan, I will now arise,” says the Lord. “I will provide safety for those who long for it” (Psalm 12:5).

God is not just found in church buildings. In fact, there are many church buildings where God will not be found because the people in those buildings do not really seek God and His will. God will be found in the most unexpected places because He has a history of going to the people who need Him in whatever places they are. And God has a heart for all oppressed peopleŠthat include the victims of domestic violence. He will rise up to provide safety for them, often in unexpected but wonderful ways.

Of all the sources we could turn to for safety, God is the greatest. May each of today’s victims of domestic violence become tomorrow’s survivor because they turn to God and find safety in Him!
