DESTREHAN – The Destrehan Wildcats continued to prove why they are one of the top prep baseball team’s in the United States. A 12-2 route of Terrebonne Tuesday afternoon brought the Wildcats overall record to an impressive 30-1 (15-0 district).

Destrehan is currently riding a 28-game win streak.

“You don’t get too many chances to win 30 games,” said Destrehan Head Baseball Coach Marty Luquet.

Brandon Maggoire picked up the victory for the Wildcats and improved his record to 6-1 on the season.

“Brandon is a quality pitcher. We are fortunate to have him,” said Luquet.

The Wildcats jumped all over the Tigers in the first couple of innings. They got three runs on two hits in the bottom of the first.

After a single to Tyrone Wethers, Trey Simon got hit by a pitch, which put runners on first and second with one out.

A double by Brandon Stevens scored the first run of the game for the Wildcats.

After Anthony Richoux reached base on an error, catcher Jacob Long ripped a double, scoring Simon and Stevens.

In the bottom of the second inning, Destrehan picked up five more runs to hold a commanding 8-0 lead.

Also, all of the runs in the bottom of the second inning came with two outs. With the bases loaded, Alex Boudreaux stepped up to the plate and hit a grand slam over the right-centerfield fence to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.

The Wildcats added one more run in the inning. With Richoux on first base, DHS got back-to-back singles, from Long and Brandon Smith to score Richoux. The inning finally ended when Terrebonne relief pitcher Brandon Chiasson got Chad Waguespack to fly out.

The top of the third saw Terrebonne get its first two runs on the board.

A lead-off double by John Verret and a walk to Henry Breaux put runners in scoring position with no outs. Designated hitter Blake Folmar then hit a double, plating Verret. A balk forced the second run of the inning home for the Tigers.

Terrebonne starting pitcher Greg Cornwell did not last long. He threw for two and 2/3 innings and was replaced by Brandon Chiasson. However, Cornwell took the loss for the Tigers, giving up seven runs on six hits.

Top hitters for the Wildcats were Tyrone Wethers (2-4), Long (3-3 2 RBI’s).

It was also senior day at DHS.

“I was glad we got to play the seniors who have not been able to see a lot of action this year,” Luquet said.
