The Hilton (NY) Cadets came a long way to face a real good pitcher. St. Charles Catholic starting pitcher Jeremy Catoire threw seven innings, allowed one hit and picked off two base runners in a 3-1 non-district victory over Hilton (NY) on Tuesday.
Charlie Previte pitched four innings for the Cadets in the loss.
In addition, Catoire struck out 10 batters and never allowed a base runner past second base.
About the only thing Catoire had to contend with occurred in the top of the seventh. Steve Liotta and Derek Lee, the first two hitters of the inning, reached base safely. Liotta reached base when he was hit by a pitch and advanced to second when Lee walked. Catoire, however, struck out two of the next three batters he faced in the inning to end the game.
In the bottom of the first, the Comets appeared as if they would strike first. Centerfielder Matt Sutton singled and stole second. He then went to third on a passed ball. With runners on first and second and one out, Previte got out of a jam when he got Jeremy Poche and Jesse Martin to fly out to end the inning.
In the second and third innings, Catoire only allowed one base runner.
The Comets got on the board in the fourth inning.
After Poche singled to start of the inning, Martin stepped up and smashed a homerun, giving the Comets a 2-0 lead. Previte settled down after the homerun and retired the next three hitters.
The lone hit for the Cadets happened in the fifth inning. After Catoire struck out John Borok to start the inning, Kevin Sullivan singled to center to break up the no hitter.
The final run for St. Charles Catholic happened in the bottom of the sixth.
With Martin on second base, Matt Heltz got up nailed a single that moved Martin to third. With one out, James Callahan hit into a sacrifice that scored Martin.
The victory put St. Charles Catholic’s record at 15-5 with Catoire’s record standing at 7-2. The Comets have remaining district games coming up against E.D. White (Tuesday) and Lutcher (Thursday).
The Comets also knocked off district foe Donaldsonville, but dropped a tough 2-1 game against John Curtis last Saturday.
In the second game, the Comets defeated the Cadets 5-4 in the second game of the doubleheader.
Hilton came down to play several teams in Louisiana.
