LAPLACE – John Villamore knows firsthand the important service that volunteers offer. Both his parents were residents of Twin Oaks Nursing Home and attended the Masses that were offered there.

Although his mother and father didn’t reside at the facility at the same time, both enjoyed the religious services, which were presented by community volunteers. Villamore often accompanied them. Each time he attended, he noticed the same gentleman assisting in setting up the altar before the priest arrived.

“When I heard this man had passed away, I decided to volunteer for the job,” said the LaPlace resident. “And I have been here ever since.” That was 25 years ago.

In preparation for the Mass, Villamore starts his routine by unpacking and placing the alter items on a roll cart, with the traditional white tablecloth neatly folded on top. He then transports them to the community room, where a large round table is set up in front of the room. He carefully places the crucifix, candles, and other items on this table that will be utilized as the altar.

Transporting the residents to the Mass is another volunteer duty Villamore gladly accepts.

“Many of our residents can’t walk and need assistance,” said the dedicated volunteer. “This does take some time to get everyone together.”

The former Marine, retired from his career in hotel maintenance management, feels that many of the people at Twin Oaks appreciate what the volunteers do, although they may not be able to show or voice their gratitude. But you may be able to see it in their eyes.

Villamore also visits with patients as time permits. “Some people just need companionship. I try to stop in and say hello whenever I can.”

His advice to those contemplating a career in volunteer work is, “Just do it. You get more out of it than you put into it.”
