LAPLACE – The first grade class of LaPlace Elementary will sponsor this year’s school Mardi Gras parade and celebration, and presiding over the festivities will be a new king and queen. Danny Delerme and Erica Payne were chosen to be the school’s 2004 Mardi Gras king and queen. Their names were drawn from a hat containing all the names of the school’s first grade class. The drawing took place during a special school Mardi Gras party featuring king cakes, carnival music and a second-line presentation by teachers and fellow students. “This time of the year is always so much fun. We all love carnival time, and it’s fun when we can find ways to incorporate the students in the festivities,” said Linda King, assistant principal at LaPlace Elementary. King said the school parade will be held this Friday (Feb. 20) in front of the main school building. Classes will be dismissed Feb. 23-24 for the Mardi Gras holiday.
