Local track stars shine

BATON ROUGE – Several River Parishes track athletes continued to perform well at state meets recently. Hahnville High School’s Avery Sorapuru was named the Class 5A state meet male outstanding field performer. Sorapuru came in second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Hahnville finished in ninth place in the boys 5A standings, while East St. John High School claimed 18th place and Destrehan finished in 19th place.

In class 3A, St. Charles Catholic High School finished in second place in the team standing behind E.D White High School. Also, Mike Bowen finished in fourth place in the individual results.

In girls 5A action, Destrehan finished in 11th place in the team standings.

In Class B, Reserve Christian School finished in sixth place in the boys team standings. Marlon Brumfield took third place in the high jump with a height of 5 foot 6.

In the girls B meet, RCS finished in ninth place in the team standings. The Eagles also fared well in the 800-meter relay. RCS finished in second with a time of 1:57:70, while also claiming second in the 400-meter relay (55.69).

Also at the Class B championship, Reserve Christian’s Frankie Francois finished second in the 800 meters, while the Eagles finished second the 1,600 meter relay. George Arnold, who also played basketball for the Eagles, finished in fourth place in the 100 meters with a time of 11.28.

In addition, the RCS girls team finished in first in the 400-meter relay with a time of 53.72.2. They also took home fourth place in the 800-meter relay.
