BOUTTE- Balanced scoring from Joey Comardelle, Al Mott, and Brett Naquin, helped pave the way for Hahnville High School to pick up a recent non-district basketball victory over Shaw High School in Boutte.
Each of the four HHS players mentioned scored in double figures. The Tigers only trailed for less than a minute during the entire game. Comardelle led the way with 14 points.
“I thought tonight was a good test for our guys,” said HHS head coach Brian Lumar. “We played with intensity in this game. We need to be able to sustain this type of play for 32 minutes in order to be successful.”
The first quarter was a close and competitive one. In addition, there were four ties in the quarter. With the score tied at 12, Davon Mitchell hit a three-pointer to give the Tigers a 15-12 lead with 2:25 remaining in the quarter. Thirty seconds later, Al Mott nailed another three-point shot to put HHS up by six, 18-12. Leading 24-19 in the second quarter, the Tigers went on a 10-0 run to grab a 10-point lead with about three minutes left in the half.
The lead expanded to 14 points thanks to a field goal from Comardelle with about one minute remaining in the first half. HHS took a 36-24 lead into the locker room. The third quarter saw Hahnville unable to break the game open as ASHS kept the home team lead under 10 points for most of the quarter. Two free throws courtesy of Shaw center Kory Castine cut the Hahnville lead to 48-40.
Leading 50-42 with just under six minutes remaining in the game, Hahnville went on a 6-0 run to break the game open at 56-42. During the run, Hahnville hit four of five free throws to expand the lead. While the Tigers were hitting free throws, the Eagles were missing them. The game may have been closer except several Eagles players did not hit their free throws when they needed to. The Catholic League School missed 18 of 40 free throws. Hahnville outscored Shaw 20-12 in the final period. Other top scorers for HHS included Davon Mitchell and Brett Naquin, who both finished with 10 points, and Al Mott, who finished with 12. For Shaw, Jesse Griffen led the way with 12, followed by Kory Castine, who contributed with 10 points. ” A win gives us momemtum and an added rush of adrenaline. It also gives us tremendous confidence,” Lumar concluded.
