Riverside versus Fisher

The Riverside Academy Rebels continued their winning ways Friday night with a 42-0 victory over Grace King High School.

“If we played like that, then maybe it should rain more often,” said RA head coach Mickey Roussel. “I guess we were used to it because we had practiced in it.”

The Rebels (4-4), who have won three consecutive contests, picked up 238 yards rushing in the victory.

“We’ve been using a lot of the pass this year, but lately we have started rushing the football better,” said Roussel.

This week the Rebels play Fisher High School in Reserve.

“I think they (Fisher) need a win in order to survive,” Roussel said.

During the three-game stretch, the Rebels’ defense has performed admirably.

“We are getting our confidence back. I just hope we can win the rest of the games and get into the playoffs,” Roussel said.

The rest of the schedule is more important for Riverside than any games previously played.

“It’s not what you did in week one or two, its what you have done lately,” Roussel explained.

St. James versus E.D. White

It is all on the line this week for St. James High School (7-1) and E.D White High School. The winner will be crowned district 10-3A champions.

The Wildcats are coming off a convincing 27-6 victory Friday over parish rival Lutcher High School, while the EDW Cardinals are coming off a 32-0 win over Morgan City.

“I thought overall we played pretty well at each end of the field, both offensively and defensively,” St. James head coach Rick Gaille.

Things will not be easy for the Wildcats due to the fact E.D White has several terrific players, as well as a consistent running game.

“They (EDW) are a physical football team that have big size and strength. We’re going to have to stand toe to toe and execute each play correctly,” Gaille said.

The Cardinals are led by running backs Jeff Reulet and Stephen Gros. Reulet has 112 rushes for 565 yards on the season, while Gros has 50 carries for 565 yards and three touchdowns on the season. Gaille said EDW may represent the best team they have played this year.

“When you look at the jamboree and look at West St. John, East St. John and others, it’s hard to tell who is the best team we have played,” Gaille said.

The game may come down to whether or not the SJ defense can stop EDW from running the ball.

Other coaches in the district predicted a great game as well.

“You have got two contrasting styles in this game. It’s going to be power versus speed. Not only do you have two good teams, but also I think you have somewhat of a rivalry here,” said St. Charles Catholic head coach Frank Monica.

St. Charles Catholic versus St. Thomas Aquinas

St. Charles Catholic High School (5-2) broke a two-game skid last week by defeating Donaldsonville High School, 7-6.

“It wasn’t a masterpiece but it was a win,” SCC head coach Frank Monica said.

Like all games in the area, the field conditions were terrible due to heavy rainfall.

“I think the weather was responsible for us not executing some plays. We had the ball four times inside the 25 (yard line) and came away with nothing,” Monica said. “I was pleased with the effort, but not with the execution.”

This week the Comets take on non-district foe St. Thomas Aquinas in LaPlace. The STA Falcons are not accustomed to losing. They have won 30 games in the last three years.

“We need to play a complete game if we’re going to win. It’s been tough to execute our offense lately because of postponed games and horrible field conditions,” concluded Monica.

The playoffs are fast approaching, and Monica does not want to be on the outside looking in.

“The top 16 in the power rankings get to host a playoff game. We don’t want to be getting in through the back door,” he said.

Hahnville versus Thibodaux

The Hahnville High School Tigers ( 7-1) suffered their first loss of the season last week at the hands of the South Lafourche High School Tarpons.

“I thought we had a chance to get back into the game but we fumbled a punt. It was just a tough game against a good team,” HHS head coach Lou Valdin said. “We didn’t play our game. We weren’t physical and we did things we don’t normally do.”

This week, the Tigers look to rebound as they host Thibodaux High School.

“Thibodaux is a very athletic team with a good defense and an outstanding receiver. I think this game could serve as a wake up call for us,” Valdin said.

Hahnville will conclude the season on the road against Central Lafourche.

“To me, I’m not worried about whether we are the second-ranked team in the state or not. What people have to know is that each district game won’t be an easy one for anybody. It’s not like in college where as if Florida State plays Tulane and wins 10 out of 10 times,” Valdin said.

Destrehan versus Terrebonne

Coming off a tough 27-21 victory over East St. John High School, the Destrehan High School Fighting Wildcats look to make it three victories in a row when they travel to Houma to play Terrebonne High School.

DHS (7-1) will continue to count on their explosive offense to get them through another tough district game. Last week, quarterback Demarko Hutchinson completed three passes in the first half, however, all three were touchdown passes to wide receiver Fred Smith.

“Fred is a special athlete. He makes big plays while he is in there,” said DHS head coach Stephen Robicheaux.

The victory gave Destrehan a shot at the district 6-5A title. For that to happen, DHS must win its remaining games and Hahnville must drop at least one of two.

East St. John versus Central Lafourche

The East St. John High School Wildcats (6-2) look to rebound from a loss against Destrehan last week when they take to the road against Central Lafourche.

ESJ sophomore quarterback Ryan Perrilloux will lead the Wildcats against the struggling Trojans. With Hahnville losing to South Lafourche, ESJ is in second place in the district.

The biggest problem this week for the Wildcats is whether they can get in a full week of practice.

“I hope this cool weather can come and dry up the field soon,” ESJ head coach Larry Dauterive said.

The Wildcats face a Trojans team that likes to spread its offense around.

“It’s going to be a hostile environment for us. We have to tighten up our defense and stop big plays from happening,” Dauterive said.

West St. John versus Riverdale

It’s homecoming Friday night for the West St. John High School Rams. The district 9-2A champs (7-1) will tackle Riverdale High School in Edgard.

“They (Riverdale) had an open date and so did we. So we signed a two-year agreement to play them,” said WSJ head coach Laury Dupont.

The Rebels are a 5A school, but play as an independent in football.

“Riverdale had been struggling the last few years, but this year they are much improved.”

Lutcher versus Donaldsonville

The Lutcher High School Bulldogs (4-4) hit the road this week to play Donaldsonville High School.

LHS is coming off a 27-6 loss at the hands of St. James and the Tigers are coming off a 7-6 loss against St. Charles.

The Bulldogs play a DHS team having a tough year.

Lutcher is fighting for a playoff position, while Donaldsonville is fighting for playoff survival.
