LAPLACE – The St. Charles Catholic Comets and Riverside Academy Rebels will advance to the regional round of playoffs after their 8-2 and 14-7 home victories Thursday.
The Comets gave up two runs in what would have otherwise been a shutout over the Lumberjacks.
The Rebels held a 6-0 lead after the second inning, then allowed Ascension Catholic to come within one point, 6-5 in the top of the fifth inning, before continuing with their home run derby hitting and stretching their lead with three runs, including a Bradley Hodges home run.
The Comets’ Chris Cancienne hit the only home run versus the Patterson team, which had not been to the playoffs in eight years. Continuous RBIs and capitalizing on the Lumberjacks’ errors, were the Comets’ keys offensively.
Defensively, Jason Waguespack pitched a complete game and “didn’t give them a chance to swing the bats,” said Comets head coach Paul Waguespack.
The Rebels will play the winner of the Kinder-St. Thomas Aquinas game, while the Comets will play either Teurlings or Cecilia at home Monday or Tuesday.
