The Comets picked off three passes and recovered a fumble on the way to a 18-6 victory over the Rams. Anthony Jacob picked off two passes, while John Borderlon caught two Jason Waguespack touchdown passes to help contribute to the Comets win. Two of the three Comets scores came after turnovers. Jacob picked off the Rams first pass in their first possession. Seven plays and 65 yards later the Comets scored on a six yard Waguespack to Bordelon pass. There was 10:05 left on the clock in the first half. The Rams were able to even the score on their second possession when Thomas Augusta caught a Randall Nicholson pass and took it 36 yards for a touchdown. Both teams had extra point trouble all evening long – neither team was able to kick a good point after touchdown. The Comets were able to regain the lead on the strength of a Waguespack field goal just before the half ended. The Comets added insurance points halfway through the second half after John Howard blocked a punt and recovered the ball on the Rams nine yard line. Waguespack then connected with Bordelon for their second touchdown strike of the night. “Turnovers hurt us,” said West St. John head coach Laury Dupont. “We need to run the ball more. Overall we are not ready to play. We’ve got to fight through growing pains.” “West St. John is a talented football team,” said St. Charles Catholic head football coach Frank Monica. “We haven’t won a jamboree (in a while). It’s memorable for us.” “The defensive line made the difference for us. We had some mental breakdowns. Overall it’s something to build on, no question,” continued coach Monica. “The winning comes first. We haven’t had a winning season in the last couple of years. We’re trying to be competitive.” “It was tremendous,” said Bordelon. “We’re just coming out, senior lead team, trying to prove something. Myself and most of our position players have been starting for three or four years. (Waguespack) has control of the game.” “The first was a flood play,” said Jacob, describing his two interceptions. “I had my zone and the ball came two me. (For the second interception) I stayed in the middle; the quarterback was looking at the number two receiver, and I went to the ball.” “The defense played really good,” continued Jacob. “You’ve got to take care of your responsibilities. It wasn’t just me. It was the whole defense.”
