(Photo courtesy of SJP Louisiana Hurricanes) EDGARD – The St. John Parish Louisiana Hurricanes must have felt that they did not have their best outing against the Memphis Blast last week. They must have been frustrated by the number of penalties yards that they gave up. Or maybe they were upset the Blast had been able to score – albeit only three points – on the defense. Either way, they took it all out Saturday on the hapless South Arkansas Jaguars. The score was a lopsided 71-0 on the Hurricanes’ side. The Canes held the Jaguars to only 41 yards of total offense – 23 rushes for 29 yards, and two completed passes for nine attempts. The Hurricanes defense intercepted two of those nine attempted passes and ran one back for a touchdown. The Hurricane’s record improved to 3-0, while the Jaguars record slid to 2-2. Offensively, the Jaguars made only three first downs, while the Hurricanes had nine. The Hurricanes also earned 241 yards of total offense, including 116 through the air on 5-9 passes and 125 yards on the ground during 19 rushes. This game, the Hurricanes only gave up 37 yards on four penalties, while the Jaguars lost 10 yards on two penalties. The Hurricanes scored 50 points in the first half. They got the ball rolling by a 65-yard kickoff return, which Darrin Jarreau ran into the end zone two plays later. The first touchdown also saw the extra point kick miss, but the Hurricanes soon struck again on a 17-yard fumble recovery that Travis O’Neal picked up and ran into the end zone. Derrick Youngblood kicked the point after touchdown. The hurricanes scored 37 points in the second quarter. Edward Portillo scored on a 1-yard run while Joan Batise picked up the two point conversion. The Hurricanes defense put more points on the board when Danny Beshears recovered a fumble in the end zone. Youngblood kicked the P.A.T. By this time the Hurricanes had scored 28 points, but that did not stop them from trying a trick play. Ernest Calloway scored on a 34-yard pass from halfback Kendrick Williams, who was given the option by quarterback Earl Barquot. Darrin Jarreau’s second touchdown came on a 5-yard run. He finished the day with three touchdowns and 100 yards rushing. Eric Barquet, in addition to his touchdown pass, caught a 41-yard touchdown reception from Adair Alexander in the fourth quarter to close the book on the scoring. Hurricanes head coach Joseph Riley said he wanted to commend his offensive coordinator Correll Charles and his defensive coordinator Ronald Rankin for doing an excellent job at getting their respective squads working together. “I want to commend them on a great job,” said Riley. “We held the other team to less than 100 yards total offense. “We went into the game trying to work on our running game, and the team had 100 yards.”
