St. Charles Catholic’s Cretin Homes sponsored legion team continued its winning streak by beating the Riverside Extra Innings Club 3-2 Monday afternoon. The Comet’s summer team took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and then held the summer Rebels scoreless for five innings. In the top of the fifth, the Rebels managed to score two runs on the strength of a botched double play. With the bases loaded and one out, the Rebels hit a grounder to the second base man. The Comet’s second baseman threw the ball to the short stop who tagged second, but the 6-3 throw to first went high. Only one run was earned against starting pitcher Michael Bonura, while the other was a charged error to the shortstop Jason Waguespack. Bonura finished the game as the winning pitcher, retiring the final seven Riverside batters, and striking out the entire side in the seventh inning. “I was able to fool them with my curve ball,” said Bonura, who had 12 strikeouts and two hits. “But it was my fast ball that did the job.” In other local legion baseball, the Golden Grove Truck Stop shut out Premier Dodge 10-0, bringing their record to 3-3 in American Legion play, and 3-3 overall. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule. The Lutcher High School team was able to score nine runs in the first three innings, while Perilloux and Matherne each got 2 hits and an RBI.
