The Tigers and Green Wave pressed on towards winning their conference championships Thursday, as LSU beat Ole Miss 13-2, and Tulane beat Cincinnati 9-7. LSU extended their post season winning streak to 15, while Tulane fought off an early retirement from the C-USA Tourney with five runs scored in the seventh and eighth innings. For Skip Bertman’s Tigers, the hits came early and fast – six runs in the first inning. They put the game away with a five-run seventh inning. Freshman left-handed pitcher Lane Mestepey (W, 10-3) allowed three hits and one unearned run while striking out four and walking one. The Tigers hit two three RBI home runs in the first inning and coasted to a victory on that momentum. Ole Miss was able to show some defensive fire, as third baseman Lance Jones caught a line drive from Wally Pontiff, tagged third and then completed the 5-3 throw for two put outs and one assist. Tulane struggled against Cincinnati throughout their game at Zephyr Field, as they pulled ahead in the third inning, but slipped behind in the sixth. The seventh and eighth innings proved decisive, as the Wave scored four runs and then one run to take the lead for good.
