LAPLACE – The beehive of recent activity at the Gillies Center on the new Highway 51 in LaPlace was the first auto, bike and truck show presented by the River Parish Motorcycle Club. Michael Schaeffer of LaPlace Speed and Custom and Bruce Walmsley of Cool Times Cyclery sponsored the event, where motorcycles, vintage cars, race cars, dragsters and street rods were included in the show along with vintage cars which had been carefully maintained and/or upgraded by their owners. Visitors examined the various components of the vehicles on display and admired the interiors of the vintage cars which included the most recent, a 1951 Chevrolet owned by Leslie Parms and the oldest, a 1937 Chevrolet owned by Byron Odell, both of Baton Rouge. Other vintage cars included a 1939 Chevrolet, a 1939 Buick and a 1941 Chevrolet. Food and drinks were sold with the proceeds going to NOAH. Schaeffer and Gillies have been staunch supporters of Noah for years. Working the refreshment table for NOAH were Lynn Triche and Sandy Schaeffer. John “Skinny” Clayton of Reserve will host the club’s major fund-raiser on July 13, 14 and 15 in Reserve. Participants can swim and “bike show” trophies will be given. That Friday, there will be check-in, fish fry and free keg beer. Saturday brings food, music, games, a bike contest and a jam session. It will be farewell on Sunday after a breakfast and religious service. Although it is the first time the event is to be held in LaPlace, Clayton, president of the Club, says it is actually the third annual show. The first one was held at the former Club Atlanta in Paulina and last year it was at St. James Park in St. James. Entrants pay a fee and it is anticipated this will be a continuous annual fund-raiser.
