DESTREHAN – Rachel Harris is generally a happy person, but she is one who is never quite satisfied with the way things are. She’s restless, searching for new things and eager to get out of what she calls her “comfort zone.” The 18-year-old daughter of Alan and Jeannine Harris of Destrehan was recently named the St. Charles Parish High School Student of the Year. She’s modest about the achievement. “It’s one of those things that just happened,” she said. What she’s more proud of is her involvement in other school activities, those that occupy her time and energy. “It’s kind of been my goal in high school to get involved in as many things as I could,” she said. She’s been captain of the Desty Darlings dance team and treasurer of the Student Council and a member of the Beta Club, prom committee, Future Business Leaders of America, in-school television production, Students Against Destructive Decisions, yearbook staff and newspaper staff. “Being a part of things makes me happy,” she said. “I’m generally a happy person.” Her parents have always provided motivation “to do all I can,” and she said the only way she can do it all is by being “incredibly organized.” Rachel said, “I have to sit back and prioritize. I have a planner and just write everything down.” Even when school is out Rachel stays busy. In the past, dance camp took up much of her time. As a graduating senior, this summer will be split between competition activities with Dance Unlimited, relaxing and a family vacation. Even her spring break activities this year will be more work, with tryouts for the Ole Miss dance team at the University of Mississippi in Oxford. “I visited eight universities in the southern region,” Rachel said, adding her priority was to stay within driving distance of her family. Her college plans include a double major in graphic design and journalism, with an eye toward magazine work. “I want to be project-oriented,” she said. “I’ve always been literary; I’ve been writing since I was like 4.” Beyond college, Rachel looks to a bright future. “I really love my community, high school and friends, but I really want to see what awaits me,” she said. “I know what I’m good at and what I like to do; I just have to find an occupation. I like to try new things. I want to do everything.”
