Day of love blesses all who attend

DEAR EDITOR: The weekend of Feb. 24 was truly amazing. It was filled with unconditional love, transcending all socio-economic lines and laughing at all preconceived notions related to life in the River Parishes. We saw people of all hues and racial persuasions giving of time, talents and treasures to honor one of their own and say “thank you” for a job well done. Coming at the close of Black History Month, the timing could not have been more appropriate as the entire community of St. John Parish, both black and white, east and west, young and old, said “we love you” to Marsha Walker. The outpouring of love and support for Marsha was so strong that everyone in attendance shed at least one tear. The tribute was filled with many blessings, both given and received, as the choir from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church set the stage for making a joyful noise unto the Lord. Other choirs lending their great gifts to the occasion were Gospel Inspiration and the Tri-Parish Community Choir. Marsha Johnson answered the question, “Who is a teacher?” with an inspired answer: Marsha Walker is a teacher. Serving as master of ceremonies for the occasion was the witty and personable Bruno Burrell Jr., who shared his memory of watching the big brothers taking the little sister in the red wagon down the street and being mentored by Marsha’s dad, who gave him not only his first job but also free advice and words of wisdom. Honoree Marsha Walker summed up the entire tribute with the simple words, “thank you.” She added the entire weekend was wonderful because it “was refreshing to know that so many people care about me.” It was refreshing also, Marsha, to be reminded that the life you lead speaks for you and one person can make a difference. The Marsha Walker Fund-Raising Committee, along with the Walker, Alexander and Sylvain families, wish to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and concern which has nourished and inspired the entire community of St. John Parish to seek the greater good. Special congratulations and best wishes for a super mini-vacation are extended to Theresa Cannon, winner of the trip to Baton Rouge.
