Hahnville celebrates season at banquet

BOUTTE – The Hahnville football team celebrated a return to excellence at it’s annual banquet Wednesday night in the school cafeteria. The Tigers went 10-0 during the regular season in 2000 and captured their first District 7-5A title since 1995. Hahnville advanced to the Class 5A regionals before losing to St. Augustine. “I can’t say enough about our senior leadership this year,” Hahnville head football coach Lou Valdin said. “They don’t know how hard it is to go undefeated, especially in our district. It’s a tremendous accomplishment.” Awards were presented to the team’s squadmen, lettermen and seniors as well as the cheerleading squad. The cheerleaders also had a successful season, placing second in dance and cheer at a national championship meet held in New Orleans recently. Individual awards were also given out to members of the football team and a highlight film of the winners was presented. A highlight film of the season was also presented throughout the dinner. Linebacker Jasen Naquin received the Scholar Athlete award. Linebacker Avery Lorio was named the team’s Outstanding Lineman. Wide receiver Corey Woods was the recipient of the Coaches’ Award, given by the assistant coaches to the player who best epitomizes what it means to be a team player. The Gold Rush Offensive MVP was awarded to running back Skyler Boyle. Defensive back Mark Barnes was named the Purple Haze Defensive MVP. And quarterback Dawan Landry was the recipient of the Tiger Award for the team’s Most Valuable Player. The Hahnville Touchdown Club presented Rudy Guidry scholarships to six players, two cheerleaders and two trainers. Players receiving scholarships were Aaron Alexander, Matt Cummins, Brooke Dufrene, Todd Folse, Dawan Landry and Jasen Naquin. Trainers receiving scholarships were Renell Fields and Lacey Marse. And cheerleaders receiving scholarships were Ashley Laque and Cristy McCully.
