Celebration of Life event planned in Destrehan
“A Celebration of Life,” a black history program presented by River Parish residents which focuses on struggles and achievements, will be conducted at the East Regional Library, 100 River Oaks Drive in Destrehan. Recitations of writings by Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes, performances of well-known songs and interpretations will be featured during the program which focuses on struggles and achievements. River Parishes Community Chorus is planning three concerts this year. The group was also invited to participate in a Black History Month celebration which will take place Feb. 20 at the Council on Aging. A variety program of music will be held in the spring. The chorus, formed in February 2000, has already performed twice at Destrehan Plantation, once at the parish Fourth of July celebration, at Relay for Life and also for a dinner/concert at Ormond Country Club. River Parish Community Chorus meets on the second Saturday of each month, new members are welcome. For information call 785-0813.

St. Peter Catholic community will celebrate Monsignor Eyraud Day tomorrow at the 11 a.m. Mass. Following the Mass, the annual alumni reunion takes place in the school auditorium. Classes from 1931, 1941, 1951, 1961, 1971, 1981 and 1991 will be honored. All Dominican sister and teachers who taught at St. Peter, St. Peter alumni and former students and their families and friends of St. Peter are invited to attend. A gumbo and potato salad dinner will be served. Donations will be accepted to cover the cost of the meal. For information call Jolyn Johnson at 536-4296.

Individual and group volunteer performers are needed for Oak Alley Plantation’s 10th annual arts and crafts festival on March 24-25 on the grounds of the plantation. The festival will offer performers a raised stage underneath a tent on the festival site. The sound system will also be provided.
