New LaPlace library project gains construction approval

LAPLACE – A new St. John the Baptist Parish library is one step closer tobeing built.

Leroy Williams, president of the St. John the Baptist Parish Library Council,got the parish council’s approval on the contract to build the new parish library on U.S. Highway 51 in what will be the Highway 51 park facility.Showing drawings of the state-of-the-art building, Williams told the council that Pellerin Construction Co. had submitted the lowest bid for constructionof the library. The bid was for $2,715,700.”We have the money for the construction,” said Williams, “and we think it is a first-class building.”Williams said construction will start as soon as Parish President Nickie Monica signs the contract with Pellerin Construction Co. He said constructionshould take at least 10 months.

Cleveland Farlough congratulated the parish for the new library and added, “I would like to see a modern state-of-the-art library for Garyville one of these days.”His comment was met with applause from the audience.

In other council business:

Economic Development Director Julia Remondet gave her report on the recent Andouille Festival and said the festival made a profit of $29,000.

Ranney Wilson congratulated Remondet for doing such a good job. “It was thebest organized festivals we have ever had,” said a pleased Wilson.

The council approved an ordinance raising the residential garbage collection fee to $10.45 per month per household. This is a raise of 3.7 percent and inaccordance with the contract between Trosclair Inc. and the parish.

After almost a year and a half, the council gave conditional approval to the Plantation Oaks II development to be constructed in Garyville. After monthsof haggling over drainage problems and resident fears, the subdivision planning will continue.

Monica got a resolution approved that would send a parish representative to be on the Lake Des Allemand Cooperative River Basin Initiative. Thisorganization is a federally-sanctioned board that will try to improve the water quality of Lake Des Allemands.
