Lafon receives regional honor

LULING – St. Charles Parish Superintendent of Schools Dr. Rodney Lafon wasrecently honored at a conference in Atlanta.Lafon was selected as the recipient of the Distinguished EducationalLeadership Award from the state of Louisiana and was presented by theSouthern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Elementary andMiddle Schools, held Dec. 3-6.”It was a humbling experience to receive this award,” Lafon said. “What anexperience to walk into a room filled with your colleagues and to be honoredfor doing something you love.”The criteria for the award requires that the recipient’s life and careerreflect a record of distinguished and dedicated service to education, anoutstanding contribution to elementary and middle school education, asignificant impact on the education profession and a reputation as aninnovator and facilitator for educational improvement.Stephen M. Baker, executive director for the Commission on Elementary andMiddle Schools, commented, “The commission is fortunate to haveconscientious educators within its ranks who possess outstanding qualitiesand who have worked diligently for the improvement of educational programsand resources.”More than 2,500 delegates attended the conference, attending workshopsand seminars on topics ranging from accreditation, technology issues,character education, international education and brain-based teaching.The Southern Association is one of six accrediting bodies in the nation andworks with schools and colleges in 11 states.
