Falcons soar past SCC behind Vial, Emery

LAPLACE – Tyler Vial scored in the first minute of play and Lee Emery Jr. hadtwo goals to lead St. Thomas Aquinas to a 5-2 victory over St. CharlesCatholic Wednesday evening at Thomas Dupuy Stadium.
St. Thomas Aquinas improved to 4-1 with the win while St. Charles Catholicfell to 1-3.
It didn’t take long for the Falcons to get on the scoreboard as Vial took a pass in the middle of the field, moved into the box and angled a shot over the reach of Comet goalie David Leblanc in the first minute of play.
Seven minutes into the contest, St. Thomas Aquinas made it 2-0 as Emerytook a turnover in the Comet zone, moved in and angled a shot into the left side of the net past a diving Leblanc.
St. Thomas Aquinas kept up the pressure as Jaime Planells took a shotdirectly on goal that was deflected away by Leblanc. Three minutes later,Michael McCormick took a shot that was grabbed by Leblanc. Vial interceptedLeblanc’s clearing kick and moved in but Chris Poche was there to defense away his shot at the 14-minute mark.
St. Charles Catholic got its first scoring opportunity at the 23-minute markas Steven Ramirez passed downfield to John Bordelon. Bordelon moved intothe Falcons’ zone but had his kick deflected away. A minute later, AndrewRevall sent a corner kick to Justin Chauvin in the box but Chauvin had his header sail wide left.
St. Thomas Aquinas regained possession but Jesse Flennor had his shot fromup front sail over the net. Three minutes later, Johnny Schillage tried a shotfrom the middle of the field but also had it sail high. With five minutes left inthe half, Hunter Chauvin took a shot from the right side that clanged off the right goal post. Planells then took a pass from Kenneth Gumpert in the boxbut had his shot grabbed by Leblanc.
St. Charles Catholic put on a rally in the final minute of the half as Chauvintried a shot from the right side that was blocked. Revall grabbed the reboundand tried a shot that sailed wide left. In the final seconds, Revall had a freekick sail high, leaving the score 2-0 at the half.
St. Thomas Aquinas made it 7-0 at the seven-minute mark of the secondhalf as Emery grabbed a rebound in front of the net after McCormick’s shot was blocked and knocked it into the right side of the net.
St. Charles Catholic answered four minutes later as Ramirez took a turnoverin the Falcons’ zone, moved down the center of the field and aimed a shot at the top of the net that was tipped over by Falcons goalie Grady Seale. On theensuing corner kick, Philip Hoffman took the pass in the center of the field, sliced between two defenders into the box and knocked in a shot to make it 3-1.
St. Thomas Aquinas came back at the 17-minute mark as McCormick wastaken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. Planells took the shot andknocked it into the left side of the net for a 4-1 lead.
St. Charles Catholic again pulled to within two at the 23-minute mark asRevall took a free kick and sailed it over the wall of defenders past a diving Seale into the right corner of the net.
St. Charles Catholic came right back as Hoffman took a shot from the leftsidelines that sailed wide. Ramirez then took a shot from the right side thatwas deflected away.
St. Thomas Aquinas looked to add to its lead as McCormick took a long passinto the Comets zone and angled a shot toward the right side of the net that was grabbed by a diving Leblanc.
The Falcons made it 5-2 two minutes later as Kinsey Dinnel had his shot from the left side blocked, grabbed the rebound and knocked it into the right side of the net.
St. Charles Catholic plays host to Faith Christian at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
