Dixon leads Wildcats

NEW ORLEANS – Destrehan’s Chris Dixon tied for third in the 100-yardbackstroke, helping the Wildcats place fifth at the Division I stateswimming championships Friday evening at the UNO Lakefront Arena Pool.

Destrehan finished with 151.5 points. Jesuit captured its 14th straightstate title with 497 points. Mandeville was a distant second with 277points, followed by Catholic of Baton Rouge with 237.5 and ArchbishopRummel with 234.5.

The Destrehan girls finished in seventh place with 99 points. Hahnvillewas 13th with 47. Dominican was the state champion for a secondstraight year with 351 points. St. Joseph’s was second with 263 andArchbishop Chapelle third with 209. Mandeville was fourth with 205,followed by Lafayette with 178 and Mount Carmel with 148.

Dixon, a senior, tied Catholic’s Robbie Wright for third in the 100backstroke with a time of 54.26 seconds. Fontainebleau’s Mark Richardwon the event with an All-American consideration time of 53.52. Henarrowly beat out Jesuit’s Jared Strecker who came in at 53.96.

Destrehan’s Kevin Braud was sixth with a time of 56.37.

Earlier in the day, Dixon placed seventh in the 200 freestyle in 1:19.13.

Braud had been eighth in the individual medley in 2:07.93. Kevin Walsh was16th in the 100 freestyle for the Wildcats with a time of 53.94. The Wildcats’ 200 freestyle relay team was sixth in a time of 1:38.56.

Jesuit won the event with a UNO Pool and LHSAA record time of 1:25.95. In the final individual event of the day, the 100 breaststroke, Destrehan’sBrad Corso was eighth in 1:02.69. Jesuit’s Alton Smith placed first with aconsideration time of 58.15. The Destrehan 400 freestyle relay team came in sixth with a time of3:31.26. The Jesuit team set another LHSAA record with a time of 3:09.32.

In the girls’ events, Hahnville’s Carol Bohnsack was sixth in the 100backstroke with a time of 1:05.98. St. Joseph’s Kristin Moon was first in arime of 1:00.87.

The Hahnville 200 freestyle relay team came in 10th with a time of1:56.68. Dominican won the state title with a consideration time of1:40.16. Destrehan’s Lacie Corso was 12th overall in the 100 breaststroke with atime of 1:17.07. Mount Carmel’s Katie Pierce had an All-Americanconsideration time of 1:06.41 in winning the state title.

The Destrehan 200-yard medley relay team was fourth with a time of2:02.84. Destrehan’s Nicole Matherne was fourth in the 100 butterfly in1:01.26 and sixth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:18.42.

Bohnsack was seventh in the butterfly in 1:03.31.
