Rebels defense swamps Patriots

MAURICE – On a rainy night, the Riverside defense drenched North Vermilion,holding the Patriots to 53 yards in offense in a 14-0 victory in the Class 2Aregionals.
Riverside (12-0) advances to the quarterfinals next week where the second-seeded Rebels will host St. Thomas Aquinas. North Vermilion finished at 8-4.
Riverside allowed North Vermilion just 45 yards rushing. Bud Duboiscompleted just one of his seven passes for eight yards. The Patriotsthreatened just once, driving from their 46 to the Riverside 13 in the secondquarter. Ryan Bugay ended the threat with an interception of Dubois. Theeight-play drive was North Vermilion’s longest of the night.
Riverside got on the board with two-and-half minutes to play in the secondquarter, driving 59 yards in seven plays. Brandon Delaneuville capped thedrive with a 11-yard run. Blake Torres’ extra point attempt was wide left,leaving the score at 6-0 at the break.
The Rebels took the second half kickoff and drove 57 yards in 12 plays.
Damian Melancon connected with Seth Johnson on a 9-yard pass for thescore. Melancon then hit John Duhe for the two-point conversion to make it14-0.
Chase Millet later recovered a muffed punt by Jonathan Hernandez.
Britt Waguespack led the Rebels with 101 yards on 18 carries. Melancon ran12 times for 49 yards and also completed 6-of-11 passes for 73 yards. TheRebels finished with 258 yards in offense, 185 on the ground. Dubois led North Vermilion with 37 yards on nine carries.
