Ouachita Christian eliminates WSJ

MONROE – For the second time in four years, Ouachita Christian eliminatedWest St. John from the Class 2A playoffs, defeating the Rams, 43-6, in theregionals Friday night.

Ouachita Christian (9-3) advances to play top-seeded Iota next week in thequarterfinals. West St. John finished its season at 8-3.

Ouachita Christian held West St. John to 130 yards in offense, including 10on the ground. Randall Nicholson completed 6-of-22 passes for 89 yards butwas intercepted twice. Aaron Sylvain caught four passes for 60 yards.

Ouachita Christian had 389 yards in offense, 268 yards coming on theground. Josh Schmitt ran 20 times for 159 yards and three touchdowns.

John Laird added 83 yards and a score on 10 carries. Cam Rowan completed8-of-18 passes for 121 yards. Dennis Burke caught four of those passes for57 yards.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard first on a 5-yard run by Schmitt. KeithAndrews added the extra point to make it 7-0 in the first quarter. That leadgrew to 14-0 a few minutes later as Rowan scored on a 2-yard run. Andrewsagain added the extra point.

Schmitt scored his second touchdown, this time from two yards out, tomake it 21-0 in the second quarter. West St. John cut the deficit to 21-6 inthe second quarter as Dwayne Bastain returned a fumble 90 yards for ascore.

Ouachita Christian pulled away with a 22-point third quarter. Laird made it28-6 with a 14-yard run. Schmitt added a 10-yard touchdown run, his third,to make it 34-6. Andrews then hit a 24-yard field goal to increase the lead to37-7. The Eagles got their final points as Rudy Niswanger returned aninterception nine yards for a score.
