Challenge awaits Lutcher against Parkview Baptist

LUTCHER – One week after going against a tough defense in Lawless, Lutcher may face an even tougher one Friday night against Parkview Baptist in the Class 3A regionals.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lutcher. Tickets are $6.Lutcher is coming off a 26-6 victory over Lawless in the bi-district playoffs last Friday. The victory improved the Bulldogs to 8-3 on the season. Lutcher had 146 of its 228 yards of offensive on the ground. Chris Johnsonled the way with nine carries for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Johnsonalso caught five passes for 58 yards and a touchdown and added a fourth touchdown on an 83-yard kickoff return. He finished with 337 all-purposeyards.

The defense dominated throughout, holding the Pythians to 42 total yards, including a minus 38 yards on the ground. Lawless got 49 of its yards on a49-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

“The defense was well prepared,” Lutcher head coach Tim Detillier said. “Ithink our defensive staff did its usual good job. I felt we shut them down.”Shutting down opponents is what Parkview Baptist has been doing all season.

The Eagles shut out three opponents during the regular season and allowed an average of nine points per game over the final nine games.

In its 61-9 victory over Port Allen in the bi-district playoffs, Parkview gave up 211 yards but held forced five turnovers, returning one for a score.

The win improved Parkview, the ninth seed, to 10-1 on the season. TheEagles’ lone loss came in the final week of the season, 26-24, at Redemptorist. It was the only time the Eagles allowed more than 20 points allseason and the only time they didn’t score more than 30. Including theplayoff game, the Eagles are averaging 47 points over the last 10 games.

“It’s going to be a challenge,” Detillier said. “But I think our schedule got usprepared for that. We’ve played some tough football teams this year andthey fit that. They are solid offensive, defensively and on special teams.”Parkview can throw the ball but will look to run first. Against Port Allen, theEagles ran 40 times for 376 yards. Chase Duplessis had 108 of the yardsand scored four touchdowns and Jordy Johnson had another 105 yards and a score.

Brad Booth passed for 114 yards and two scores. Five different playersscored touchdowns on offense in the game for the Eagles.

Booth is in his first year as the starting quarterback. Joining him in thebackfield is Jeremy Hill, Duplessis and Johnson. Kyle Ripple was one of theleading receivers in Class 3A in the Baton Rouge area with 28 catches for 443 yards in the regular season and will be joined in the receiving corps by Tyler Bargas. The line is both huge and solid, led by Brian Booth and BenRawls.

Parkview is also big on the defensive line, led by John Morris at end. Thelinebacking corps is led by junior Anthony Camp.

“It’s going to be an awesome challenge but we are playing the best we have all year,” Detillier said.

The winner of Friday’s game will play the winner of Breaux Bridge and E.D.White in the quarterfinals.
