Cards, Becnel run by Comets

THIBODAUX – Jonathan Becnel carried 34 times for 286 yards and three touchdowns as E.D. White defeated St. Charles Catholic, 42-21, Friday night.E.D. White completed the regular season at 6-4 overall and 2-2 in District 9-3A. St. Charles Catholic, which needed a victory and a Donaldsonville win atLutcher to finish as the district runners-up, finished at 3-7 overall and 1-3 in district.
E.D. White is projected to play Lutcher in the Class 3A bi-district playoffsnext week.
The Cardinals rolled up 424 yards in offense, 410 coming on 63 rushing attempts. Jeff Reulet added 53 yards on six carries. Christian Stanga had 42yards on eight attempts. Jon Hymel scored twice and ran for 20 yards onfive carries. E.D. White had 22 first downs in the contest. The Cardinals’ didlose three fumbles in the game with the Comets returning two for touchdowns.
St. Charles Catholic gained 263 yards in offense but committed fiveturnovers. Jason Waguespack completed 17-of-39 passes for 188 yards andthree interceptions. Michael Grady added 31 yards on 2-of-4 passing. DougFriloux ran eight times for 33 yards and a touchdown. The Comets as a teamhad 44 yards rushing on 14 carries and picked up a total of 17 first downs.
Hymel scored on runs of 14 and nine yards in the first quarter and Justin Verret added two extra points. Friloux scored on a 2-yard run and PhilHoffman added the extra point to make it 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Evan Matherne had a 7-yard touchdown run with 10:49 left in the second quarter. Verret made the extra point to make it 21-7, E.D. White. Becnelthen added a 69-yard touchdown just over two minutes later. Verret againsplit the uprights, building the lead to 28-7 with 8:17 left in the half.
That lead grew to 35-7 in the third quarter as Becnel scored on a 2-yard run.
Verret added the point after for a 35-7 lead at the 5:10 mark of the quarter.
The Comets got back on the scoreboard as Shannon Graver returned a fumble 20 yards for a score. Hoffman added the point after to cut thedeficit to 35-14 with 2:53 left in the quarter.
Less than two minutes later, Chris Cancienne returned another fumble 82 yards for a score. Hoffman’s extra point brought the Comets to within 35-21 with 1:21 remaining in the third.
But Becnel was not finished yet. He added a third touchdown on a 1-yard runwith 1:48 left in the game. Verret added the final point to make it 42-21.
