Family, friends, good neighbors – that’s what it’s all about. And, when youcan get them together for a special occasion or two, it’s even better! We have been doing for the last two weekends, and we have one more to go! We like celebrating happy occasions.

First, we got together for a “Honey-Do” shower for my future nephew, Macky Waguespack, who will, in December, wed my darling niece, Sunny Stein. Theevent took place at the home of my brother, Carl, who lives just down the street from me. It was a good one! Using the creative streak anddetermination that keeps coming out in Carl, a former old swimming pool was filled with water to float candles and feature a fountain. Food and drink wasserved in the kitchen inside and outside under tents. Mosquitoes wereplentiful so we went through several cans of spray! Macky, son of Wag and Debbie of St. James Parish, seemed delighted with allthe gifts received, even if they were designed for chores, lots of them. Atleast Macky will be properly equipped when Sunny gets him to take out the garbage, sweep, hang pictures or even cook, since my mom and I gave him a pot. Usually, everybody thinks of the bride, so it seems a good idea to helpout the groom, too. Besides, when a couple is just starting out, we need togive them a really good start! There was quite a large gathering at the party. Some said it was somethinglike a wedding reception, but that won’t happen until December. There was alarge group of young athletes, Macky’s friends, who seemed to be glad to be there, and combined with family and friends from both sides we had a good crowd. The biggest crowd-pleaser was probably the roasted pig, deliciouslydone by friend Gary Boutwell of Garyville, who was there with wife Johnnie.

Do you know how much fun karaoke can be? We do! Just put a microphone in the hands of my cousins, Debbie Poche, Dawn Dottolo and Armant Falgoust, and it really becomes a party. Offsetting all this talent were femalemembers of family and friends, veils perched on their heads as bridesmaids, doing an really comical rendition of “going to the chapel.” I believe my sister,Maria, came up with that one, but she doesn’t like for me to use her name! It was a great party! The next day at Maria’s house we had a baby shower for Jennifer, wife of our nephew Sammy Accardo, Jr. That really went off well with the theme being”an ice cream sundae shower.” Niece Christy Himel poured the ice creamfrom a machine they once used in business, and there were colorful sundae and banana-split dishes plus lots of toppings to satisfy even the most discriminating taste! A cake and balloons added to the festive touch! Sammy and Jennifer expect their baby in November, and since we are such a large family we are thinking about taking numbers or making appointments to go over to hold it. Future paternal grandparents, Cookie and Sammy ofLaPlace, and future maternal grandparents, Sandy and Richard Jandura of Ascension Parish, are positively beside themselves about the expected arrival.

Gifts from my family were stacked in an old wicker clothesbasket, donated by Sammy’s grandmother, my mom, Vita, who used to put Sammy to sleep in it when he was an infant. It wasn’t old at that time! Jennifer will cherish it;the baby would probably prefer a bed.

Then, cousins Donna and Armant Falgoust hosted a birthday bash at their home for Dawn Falgoust Dottolo, one of the most fun people I know. She isthe daughter of Frances and the late Pete Falgoust and the mom of Duffy.

My late brother, Tony, Dawn’s godfather, who was pretty conservative, used to say, surprisingly, “We could all be more like Dawn.” She takes life lightlyas it comes and even though she wouldn’t care, I am not telling her age.

Family, friends, neighbors – in my opinion, that is what we need to celebrate.
