WSJ braces for aerial attack

EDGARD – Last week, West St. John went against the ground attack ofRiverside. This week, the Rams have to prepare for an aerial bombardmentby Redeemer-Seton.

The District 9-2A showdown begins at 7 p.m. at West St. John’s Sugar Dome.Redeemer-Seton’s attack features quarterback Donald Allen, the leading passer in the area in Class 2A. Allen has completed 81-of-149 passes for1,642 yards and 23 touchdowns. In Redeemer-Seton’s 40-9 non-districtvictory over False River Friday, he completed 18-of-26 passes for 315 yards and six touchdowns.

Kevin Marrero and Nick Hunter each had three touchdown receptions in the game. Hunter, who caught seven passes for 117 yards, is the leadingreceiver in the area in Class 2A with 30 catches for 701 yards and 13 touchdowns. Marrero, who also caught seven passes for 158 yards, is notfar behind with 29 catches for 549 yards and nine scores.

The victory over False River improved Redeemer-Seton to 6-1 overall on the season. The Rams enter the game Friday night with a 2-1 mark in District 9-2A.

While Redeemer-Seton has the most prolific receiver and quarterback in the area in Class 2A, West St. John features one of the top backs in DevinHerbert. Despite being held to 31 yards on 19 carries in the Rams’ 35-10loss against Riverside Friday, the junior has rushed for 675 yards and seven touchdowns on 103 carries (6.6 yard average). The Rams rushed for 114yards in the game, led by Darnell Landry with 40 yards on six carries.

Randall Nicholson completed 14 of his 36 passes in the game for 159 yards and a touchdown. Jamailar Mayho was the leading receiver with 69 yards anda score on seven receptions. Nicholson has now passed for 688 yards and sixtouchdowns on 56-of-124 passing.

Those backs will be going against a Redeemer-Seton defense that allowed 181 yards rushing to False River but only 20 yards through the air. Thatdefense is led by a front line of end Alfred Jeanmarie and tackle Eddie Thomas. Greg Brumfield, Keith Johnson, Jyran Brown, DeBaron Garcia andJeremy Stevens make up the linebacking corps.

West St. John goes into Friday’s game tied for second place in District 9-2Awith a 3-1 record. The Rams are 5-2 overall.West St. John rolled to a 54-8 victory over Redeemer-Seton at home lastyear. Carl Gauthier passed for 142 yards and two touchdowns and 13different backs combined to rush for 147 yards and five touchdowns.

West St. John closes out its regular season next week at Fisher.
