Wildcats enter final district stretch

ST. JAMES – St. James can set up a showdown for the lead in District 9-3Aagainst Lutcher next week.
But first the Wildcats must take care of business Friday night against E.D.White.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at E.D. White.St. James is coming off a 27-20 victory at St. Charles Catholic last Fridaythat improved the Wildcats to 1-1 in district and 4-3 overall.
E.D. White fell to Lutcher, 22-10, dropping the Cardinals to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in district.
St. James rolled up 360 yards in offense against the Comets. Chris Hymelcompleted 11-of-21 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown and also ran for a score. Seven of Hymel’s passes went to Davin Dennis for 146 yards. Travell Steib and Michael Harry combined to run for 157 yards. The Wildcatdefense gave up 196 yards, 82 on the ground.
E.D. White gained 211 yards against the Bulldogs. Jon Becnel led the way with20 carries for 76 yards. Becnel increased his season totals to 141 carriesfor 853 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Cardinals’ only points of the game came on a 68-yard touchdown pass from Evan Matherne to Matt Matis on the opening possession and a Justin Verrett 22-yard field goal. The defense gave up 295 yards, 146 on theground.
The defense has been a strong point for the Cardinals, giving up an average of 15.4 points per game, tops in the district. The front seven is led by ends Shaffer Robichaux and Marc Talbot, tackles Stephen Raynal, Michael Bouterie and Ryan Gravois and linebackers Luke Savoie and Josh Perque. The secondary is led by Verrett, David Stock, DerekHebert and Laird Ellender.
Matherne, who completed 6-of-11 passes for 88 yards against Lutcher, is the quarterback. Matis has been his leading receiver. Up front are tackleMarc Montet and center Chris Rodrigue.
Special teams continues to be a strong point for the Cardinals. Verrett hasbeen consistent on field goals and James Wilcox is one of the leading punters in the area.
St. James put on an air show against the Cardinals last year in a 32-7 win.Corey Webster passed for 350 yards while Dennis had 265 yards in receptions.
