Rebels face stiffer test

RESERVE – Riverside was able to give its starters a bit of a rest in a 56- 13 victory over Buras Friday in the District 9-2A opener.
This week the road appears to get a little tougher as the Rebels play host to Redeemer-Seton in a battle of unbeatens Friday night. Kickoff isscheduled for 7 p.m.Both teams enter the game with overall records of 4-0. Both won theirdistrict openers handily last week as Redeemer-Seton defeated Fisher, 30-0, Saturday. Riverside has out-scored its opponents, 149-55, so farthis season. Ridgewood can match the Rebels’ scoring output, out-scoringits opponents, 171-40, through the first four games.
Riverside gained 347 yards in its victory against Buras. Over 230 of thoseyards came on the ground, led by Britt Waguespack with 102 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries. It was Waguespack’s third game thisseason of 100-plus yards. Brandon Delaneuville carried 10 times foranother 48 yards and two touchdowns.
Damian Melancon completed 4-of-5 passes for 90 yards, including a 30- yard touchdown pass to Gus Entremont. Entremont had all four of theRebels’ receptions. Melancon has now completed 18 of his 32 passes forfour touchdowns this season. Entremont has 13 catches for 158 yards andthree scores.
The Riverside defense gave up 235 yards to the Wildcats but allowed just one long scoring drive. The special teams set up 25 points behind a safety,a blocked punt and two fumble recoveries.
Redeemer-Seton showed a balanced attack in its victory over Fisher, rushing for 136 yards and passing for another 126. Donald Allen completed11 of his 19 passes for 126 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
Arton Nelson caught four of the passes for 113 yards. Nick Hunter andKendrick Bailey had touchdown receptions. The Rams held Fisher to 90yards, 39 through the air, Allen and Hunter have been one of the most prolific duos in the area this season. Allen, a senior, has completed 38-of-65 passes for 818 yards and13 touchdowns through the first four games. Hunter has 20-plus catchesfor over 550 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has had two of the bestreceiving games in the state this season, 264 yards on nine catches against Pope John Paul II and 149 yards on three catches against Lutheran.
The defense is led by its line. Leading that front is senior end AlfredJeanmarie and tackle Eddie Thomas, a 6-4, 330-pound junior. Thelinebacking corps and secondary is also junior-laden with Greg Brumfield, Keith Johnson, Jyran Brown, DeBaron Garcia and Jeremy Stevens.
A year ago, the Rebels rolled past the Rams, 45-6. Waguespack andDelaneuville combined to rush for 234 yards and five touchdowns.
Riverside will take a break from district play next Friday, traveling to E.D.White.
