Pirates capture another title

LAPLACE – The Pirates Softball Club, out of St. John the Baptist Parish,captured their fourth consecutive Buddy Lawson overhand softball title with a 4-1 victory over Kenner-based TNT last Sunday.
The Pirates started their quest for the fourth staright title with a come- from-behind 12-1 victory over the Braves Aug. 6 at Buddy Lawson Park inKenner.
With two men out and runners on first and second in the final inning, the Braves opted to walk Herbert carter and pitch to Paul Fleming. Flemingthen lined a single up the middle to score the winning run.
The victory sent the Pirates to the championship round. After defeatingthe Barves again, 7-0, the Pirates played TNT in the championship.
In the double elimination contest, TNT defeated the Pirates, 6-3.
In a winner-take-all game, the Pirates never trailed, striking back with a 10-hit attack led by Fleming, Louis Gardner and Errol Manuel, all of which had two hits apiece.
Fleming led the offense in the tournament with a .600 playoff battingaverage.
Team members of the champion Pirates were Phil Adams, Ali Burl, Herbert Carter, Michael Carter, Cornell Colfer, Korman Davis, Huey Fleming Jr.,Paul Fleming, Louis Gardner, Brandon Henderson, Wendell Henderson, Errol Manuel, Waylon Martin, Calvin Plansiance, Joe Robinson, Darius Scott, David Smith, Charles Stirgus and Edwin Williams.
